Resumen El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar los efectos de la inclusión de vainas de mezquite (Prosopis laevigata) en la dieta sobre las variables productivas y la digestibilidad in vivo en conejos en crecimiento. Se llevó a cabo una prueba de comportamiento animal utilizando un diseño completamente al azar con 36 conejos al destete, hembras asignadas a una de tres dietas-tratamiento con diferente concentración de vaina de mezquite molida (VMM): T1 (dieta sin VMM), T2 (dieta con 15% de VMM) y T3 (dieta con 30% de VMM). Se midió el consumo de alimento, ganancia de peso, conversión alimenticia y rendimiento de la canal; además, se determinó la digestibilidad in vivo de las dietas. Se encontraron diferencias significativas (p < 0.05) en la ganancia diaria de peso, consumo de alimento, rendimiento en canal y digestibilidad entre T1 y T3. La conversión alimenticia no mostró diferencias entre tratamientos (p > 0.05). La vaina de mezquite aporta un contenido nutricional adecuado en dietas de conejos al 15% sin afectar las variables productivas y digestibilidad de la materia seca.

Abstract The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects on productive variables and in vivo digestibility of the inclusion of mesquite (Prosopis laevigata) pods in diets for growing rabbits. A production trial was carried out using thirty-six weaned-female rabbits in a completely randomized design assigned to one of three treatment diets containing different concentrations of ground mesquite pods (VMM): T1 (Diet without VMM), T2 (Diet 15% VMM), and T3 (Diet 30% VMM). Feed intake, weight gain, feed conversion, carcass yield, and in vivo digestibility of the diets were measured. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found in daily weight gain, feed intake, carcass yield and dry matter digestibility between T1 and T3. Feed conversion ratio did not show significant differences among treatments (p < 0.05). Mesquite pods provide an adequate nutritional content to rabbit diets, and when used at 15%, they do not affect the productive variables and digestibility.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of milking hygiene practices, herd size, water hardness, and temperature-humidity index (THI) on the physicochemical and microbiological characteristics of raw milk, and standard plate count (SPC) in milking machines of dairy farms in the central region of Mexico. Data were collected from fifty-three dairy farms during one year. The evaluated effects included milking hygiene conditions (good, medium, poor), herd size (1-50, 51-100, 101-150, ≥151 heads), water hardness (soft or moderately hard), and THI (comfortable or stressful). The increase in milking hygiene produced greater milk yield (MY) and energy corrected milk (ECM) but lower protein content, and decreased the individual bacterial count (IBC) and somatic cell count (SCC). The MY, ECM, protein content, IBC, and SCC were higher on bigger farms. The use of soft water reduced MY, IBC, and SCC, but improved fat, lactose, total solids (TS), and non-fat solids (NFS). Heat stress negatively affected fat, protein, TS, NFS, acidity, freezing point (FP), SCC, and methylene blue dye reduction test. Poor milking hygiene contributes to higher SPC in milking machine parts. Water hardness and THI did not affect SPC in all milking machine parts. Proper milking hygiene practices, larger herd size, softer water, lower THI, and adequate cleaning and disinfection of the milking machine parts benefits the physicochemical and microbiological quality of the milk.

Abstract Three reproductive protocols were evaluated: 1) PG: injection of PGF2α on d-50 postpartum and insemination (AI) based on estrus detection. 2) OVS (Ovsynch: d 0, GnRH; d 7, PGF2α; d 9, GnRH; d 10, AI); 3) ROV (GnRH + Ovsynch: d- 7, GnRH; d 0, GnRH; d 7 PGF2α; d 9, GnRB; d 10, AI). In addition, the effect of somatotropin (bST) to AI, on fertility at first postpartum service (FERT), and pregnancy rate at 99 d postpartum (PP) FERT was similar in ROV and OVS (36.2 vs 36.6 %) (P>0.05); and higher than PG (27.3 %) (P<0.05). Likewise, FERT was similar with and without bST (36.2 vs 30.6 %, P>0.05). PG and without bST (22.5 %) was lower than OVS with (38.5 %) and without bST (33.7 %), as well as than ROV with (37.0 %) and without bST (36.1 %), and PG with bST (32.9 %). The pregnancy rate at 99 d was: OVS (60.6 %); ROV (54.3 %), higher than PG group (46.8 %) (P>0.05). OVS with (64.7 %) and without bST (56.5 %) and ROV without bST were higher than PG without bST (41.1 %, P<0.05). In conclusion, GnRH before Ovsynch (ROV) and bST at AI did not increase fertility at the first service in Holstein cows under heat stress. OVS and ROV increased fertility of first service postpartum and pregnancy rate to 99 d postpartum. Somatotropin increased fertility of first postpartum service only in PG treated cows.

Resumen: Tres protocolos reproductivos fueron evaluados: 1) PG: inyección de PGF2α en el día 50 posparto e inseminación (IA) en base a detección del estro. 2) OVS (Ovsynch: día 0, GnRH; día 7, PGF2α; día 9, GnRH; día 10, IA); y 3) ROV (GnRH + Ovsynch: día- 7, GnRH; día 0, GnRH; día 7, PGF2α; día 9, GnRH; día 10, IA). Además, el efecto de la somatotropina (bST) a la IA, sobre la fertilidad al primer servicio posparto (FERT), y la tasa de preñez a 99 días posparto (PP). FERT fue similar en ROV y OVS (36.2 vs 36.6 %) (P>0.05); y mayor a PG (27.3 %) (P<0.05). Igualmente, FERT fue similar con bST y sin bST (36.2 vs 30.6 %, P>0.05). PG y sin bST (22.5 %) fue menor que OVS con (38.5 %), y sin bST (33.7 %); y que ROV con bST (37.0 %) y sin bST (36.1 %); y PG con bST (32.9 %) (P<0.05). La tasa de preñez a 99 días PP fue: OVS (60.6 %); ROV (54.3 %), superior al grupo PG (46.8 %) (P<0.05). OVS con bST (64.7 %), y sin bST (56.5 %), y ROV sin bST fueron mayores que PG sin bST (41.1 %, P<0.05). En conclusión, GnRH previo al Ovsynch (ROV) y la bST al momento de la IA no incrementaron la fertilidad del primer servicio en vacas Holstein en estrés calórico. OVS y ROV incrementaron la fertilidad del primer servicio posparto y la tasa de preñez a 99 días posparto. La somatotropina incrementó la fertilidad del primer servicio posparto solo en vacas tratadas con PG.

Abstract: Solar radiation is necessary for life on Earth. Environmental pollution is contributing to global climate change, in ways such as degrading the atmospheric ozone layer, vital to controlling the type and amount of ultraviolet (UV) radiation reaching the surface. Domestic animals are constantly directly exposed to solar radiation and can consequently develop skin lesions, optical tumors and thermal stress, or even die. UV light produces oxidative stress of the skin due to excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can damage cells, causing cell aging or cancer. Antioxidants neutralize these harmful agents, but their activity decreases with organism age and metabolic state. A review was done of the histology and physiology of the skin, and the effects of UV radiation on domestic animals using bibliographic databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, Science) as well as journals available on the Internet. Understanding the effects of UV radiation on the health of domestic animals is vital since it can have substantial financial impacts on producers, compromise animal welfare and the quality and safety of animal-origin products.

Resumen: La luz solar es necesaria para todos los organismos vivos que habitan el planeta Tierra, pero debido a la contaminación ambiental, se ha generado un cambio climático a nivel mundial, que ha afectado a los seres vivos debido al desgaste en la capa de ozono, la cual es importante para evitar el paso de la radiación ultravioleta (UV); ésta afecta principalmente a los animales domésticos que están en contacto directo con ella, provocándoles lesiones cutáneas, tumoraciones ópticas, estrés térmico o incluso la muerte. La luz UV produce en la piel estrés oxidativo, el cual se da por una excesiva producción de especies reactivas del oxígeno (ERO), que pueden dañar a la célula causando envejecimiento celular o cáncer. Los antioxidantes neutralizan a estos agentes lesivos, pero van disminuyendo su actividad con la edad y el estado metabólico del organismo. Para la realización de este trabajo se hizo una revisión sistemática en bases bibliográficas (PubMed/MEDLINE, Science) y en revistas públicas por medio de internet; considerando la histología y fisiología de la piel y las afecciones a ésta provocadas por la exposición a la luz UV en animales domésticos. Es importante conocer los efectos de la radiación UV en la salud de los animales domésticos, ya que puede afectar económicamente a la actividad agropecuaria, comprometer el bienestar animal y la calidad e inocuidad de los productos de origen animal.

Abstract: In order to determine its effect on incidence of retained fetal membranes (RFM) and postpartum uterine pathologies in dairy cows, the administration of two injections of PGF2α in the first 48 h after parturition was tested. In this study, 800 cows with different parities were randomly assigned to two treatment groups: PGF2α (n= 400), receiving two postpartum PGF2α injections (500 μg of cloprostenol sodium), one during the first 12 h and one at 48 h; and control (n= 400), not receiving PGF2α. The incidence of RFM (cows that had not expelled the placenta at 24 h postpartum), and of postpartum uterine pathologies (metritis and endometritis), was registered, as well as pregnancy rate at first service and percentage of pregnant cows at d 150 postpartum. Control cows had a higher probability of presenting RFM (Odds ratio 1.69; P= 0.01) than cows treated with PGF2α. Likewise, the proportion of cows with uterine pathologies at d 28 postpartum was lower (P= 0.01) in cows treated with PGF2α (29.8 %) than in control cows (36.7 %). The accumulated pregnancy rate at d 150 postpartum was higher in cows with normal involution than in cows with uterine pathologies (Odds ratio 1.4, P= 0.03). It is concluded that two injections of PGF2α in the first 48 h postpartum (at 12 and 48 h) lowers the incidence of RFM and of uterine pathologies in dairy cows.

Resumen: Se probó si la administración de dos inyecciones de PGF2α en las primeras 48 h posparto disminuye la incidencia de retención de las membranas fetales (RMF) y de patologías uterinas en vacas lecheras. Se utilizaron 800 vacas de diferente número de partos, las cuales se asignaron aleatoriamente a dos tratamientos; PGF2α (n= 400) recibieron una inyección de PGF2α (500 μg de cloprostenol sódico) en las primeras 12 h posparto y una segunda inyección 48 h después; testigo (n= 400) no recibió PGF2α. Se registró la incidencia de RMF (vacas que no eliminaron la placenta de las siguientes 24 h posparto) y de patologías uterinas (metritis y endometritis), tasa de gestación en el primer servicio y porcentaje de vacas gestantes en el día 150 posparto. Las vacas testigo tuvieron mayor probabilidad de RMF (Odds ratio 1.69; P= 0.01) que las vacas tratadas con PGF2α. La proporción de vacas con patologías uterinas en el día 28 posparto fue menor (P= 0.01) en las vacas tratadas con PGF2α (29.8 %) que en las testigo (36.7 %). La tasa de gestación en el día 150 posparto fue mayor en las vacas con involución normal que en las vacas con patologías uterinas (Odds ratio 1.4, P=0.03). Se concluye que dos inyecciones de PGF2α en las primeras 48 h posparto (primeras 12 y 48 h posparto) disminuyen la incidencia de RMF y de patologías uterinas en vacas lecheras.

Abstract: The objective was to compare the pregnancy rate (PR) between two timed AI protocols in dairy cattle. Two hundred seventy-five (275) cows were presynchronized with PGF2α given 14 d apart beginning at d 32 postpartum; 12 d after second PGF2α, cows were assigned to two treatments: 1) Ovsynch (n=144) received GnRH, followed 7 d later by PGF2α and then GnRH 56 h after PGF2α and cows were inseminated 16 h later 2) PRID5d (n=131), received GnRH and a progesterone-releasing intravaginal device, which remained in place 5 d. Cows received an injection of PGF2α at the time of progesterone device removal and a second injection of PGF2α 24 h later. At 56 h following progesterone device removal, the next injection of GnRH was given and cows were inseminated 16 h later. Pregnancy diagnosis was performed 45 d after AI by transrectal palpation. PR was compared by logistic regression analysis. Independent variables were: treatment (Ovsynch vs PRID5d), milk yield (≤40 vs >40 kg), technician (1 vs 2), puerperium (normal vs abnormal), parity (primiparous vs multiparous) and standing estrus during presynchronization. PR was similar (P>0.1) between treatments (27 vs 21 %; Ovsynch and PRID5d, respectively). There was no effect of the other independent variables on PR. The interaction of these variables with the treatment did not affect PR (P>0.1). In conclusion, PR was similar in dairy cows inseminated by an Ovsynch protocol or through modified Ovsynch which included progesterone during 5 d and reduction of the interval between the GnRH and PGF2α from 7 to 5 d.

Resumen: Se comparó la tasa de gestación (TG) en vacas lecheras inseminadas a tiempo fijo mediante dos protocolos. El día 32 posparto, 275 vacas recibieron dos inyecciones de PGF2α con intervalo de 14 días. Doce días después de la segunda inyección, se asignaron a los siguientes tratamientos: 1) Ovsynch (n=144) recibieron GnRH; siete días después PGF2α; 56 h más tarde GnRH y se inseminaron 16 h después 2) PRID5d (n=131) recibieron GnRH y un dispositivo intravaginal liberador de progesterona durante cinco días; al retirar el dispositivo, se aplicaron dos inyecciones de PGF2α con intervalo de 24 h; 56 h posterior al retiro del dispositivo, se aplicó GnRH y se inseminaron 16 h después. La gestación se diagnosticó por palpación rectal el día 45 posinseminación. Se comparó la TG mediante regresión logística. Las variables independientes fueron: tratamiento (Ovsynch vs PRID5d), producción láctea (≤40 vs >40 kg), técnico inseminador (1 vs 2), tipo de puerperio (normal vs anormal), partos previos (primíparas vs multíparas) y si mostraron estro en la presincronización. La TG fue similar (P>0.1) entre los tratamientos (27 vs 21 %; Ovsynch y PRID5d, respectivamente). Ninguna de las otras variables independientes afectó la TG (P>0.1); no hubo efecto de la interacción de dichas variables con el tratamiento en la TG (P>0.1). Se concluye que la TG fue similar entre las vacas inseminadas con un protocolo Ovsynch o mediante un protocolo Ovsynch modificado que incluyó 5 días de progesterona y la reducción de 7 a 5 días entre la inyección de GnRH y la PGF2α.

The aim of this study was to compare the honey yields and levels of Varroa destructor between colonies of Africanized honey bees (AHB) (Apis mellifera) showing high and low hygienic behavior (HB) in Mexico's semi-arid high plateau. The degree of HB of 57 colonies was measured using the liquid nitrogen (N2) brood-freezing technique. The colonies were categorized into two groups: high HB (> 95 %) and low HB (< 50 % removal of freeze-killed brood at 48 h). Honey production was evaluated in fall and spring and the level of Varroa on adult bees was determined before and during the honey harvests. The colonies with high HB produced significantly more honey than the colonies with low HB only during the spring crop (21.4 ± 4.7 vs 13.4 ± 5.0 kg; P<0.01). There were no significant differences between the two groups of colonies for levels of infestation by V. destructor (P>0.05). These results suggest that apparently HB does not have a major role in restraining the growth of Varroa populations in AHB. They also suggest that high levels of HB could contribute to increase honey production in AHB colonies during times of the year with limited nectar flow.

El objetivo del estudio fue comparar la producción de miel y los niveles de Varroa destructor entre colonias de abejas africanizadas (AA) (Apis mellifera) con alto y bajo comportamiento higiénico (CH) en el altiplano semiárido de México. Se midió el nivel de CH a 57 colonias por congelamiento de la cría con nitrógeno líquido (N2). Las colonias se clasificaron en dos grupos: alto CH (> 95 %) y bajo CH (< 50 % de remoción de la cría muerta por congelamiento en 48 h). La producción de miel se evaluó durante el otoño y la primavera y el nivel de infestación por Varroa en abejas adultas se determinó antes y durante las cosechas de miel. En primavera, las colonias con CH alto produjeron significativamente más miel que las de CH bajo (21.4 ± 4.7 vs 13.4 ± 5.0 kg; P<0.01). No hubo diferencias entre los dos grupos de colonias para los niveles de Varroa (P>0.05). Estos resultados sugieren que aparentemente el comportamiento higiénico no tiene un efecto mayor en la resistencia de las AA al crecimiento poblacional del ácaro. También sugieren que el comportamiento higiénico alto podría contribuir a incrementar la producción de miel en épocas del año con flujo reducido de néctar.

Epididymitis due to Brucella ovis infection lead to a disease with great importance in Mexican sheep industry. In the affected rams produces a low productivity due to a decreased fertility. The objective of the study was to determine the relevance of different possible risk factors (production system, density of sires, population of ewes, ewes:ram ratio, mating system and sires breed) upon B. ovis prevalence in Zacatecas, México. A sample of 544 rams was obtained in 153 flocks from four production systems. The serological test was determined by double immunodiffusion. The positive sampled rams were 18.6 % (101/544) and 10.5 % (16/153) of the sampled flocks had at least one positive ram. The semi-intensive production system showed a major prevalence (P<0.05) with 86.1 % (87/101) of the positive rams, the extensive system with 11.9 % (12/101), the backyard with 2.0 % (2/101) and the intensive did not register positives. The prevalence of B. ovis was higher in larger flocks, with the largest number of ewes and rams. Katahdin rams showed a major prevalence (30.8 %) (24/78) than Rambouillet (14.0 %) (18/129), Dorper (13.8 %) (31/224) and Suffolk rams (13.8 %) (8/58); (P<0.05). The prevalence was associated more with the production system used, than the ratio ewes:ram or mating system. The results suggest that the amount of sires within each flock is the most important factor in the serological prevalence of B. ovis (OR= 17.38, 95% IC 7.76-38.94), although this potential factor could be subject to the production system.

La epididimitis causada por Brucella ovis es una enfermedad de importancia en los rebaños ovinos de México. En los sementales afectados ocasiona baja productividad por la disminución de la fertilidad. El objetivo del estudio fue determinar la relevancia de diferentes posibles factores de riesgo (sistema de producción, densidad de sementales, total de vientres, relación hembras:macho, sistema de empadre y raza del semental) sobre la prevalencia de B. ovis en Zacatecas, México. Se muestrearon 544 sementales, en 153 rebaños, provenientes de cuatro sistemas de producción. La respuesta serológica se evaluó mediante inmunodifusión doble en gel. El 18.6 % (101/544) de los sementales muestreados resultaron positivos y el 10.5 % (16/153) de los rebaños presentó al menos un semental positivo. El sistema semi-intensivo presentó la mayor prevalencia (P<0.05), con 86.1 % (87/101) de sementales positivos, el extensivo 11.9 % (12/101), el traspatio 2.0 % (2/101), y el intensivo no registró positivos. La prevalencia de B. ovis fue más alta en los rebaños más grandes, con mayor número de vientres y sementales. Los sementales de raza Katahdin mostraron mayor prevalencia (30.8 %) (24/78) que los Rambouillet (14.0 %) (18/129), Dorper (13.8 %) (31/224) y Suffolk (13.8 %) (8/58) (P<0.05). La prevalencia se relacionó más con el sistema de producción utilizado que con la relación hembras:macho o el sistema de empadre. Los resultados obtenidos sugieren que la cantidad de sementales en el rebaño es el factor de mayor relevancia en la prevalencia serológica de B. ovis (OR = 17.38, 95 % IC 7.76 a 38.94), aunque pudiera estar supeditado al sistema de producción.

In the present study, seasonal variation in ovulatory activity of Nubian, Alpine and Criollo x Nubian goats in the semiarid region of central-northern Mexico (22° 14' N) was examined. The study was conducted under natural photoperiod and climate conditions during a whole year. Eight female goats per breed were grouped separately and exposed to visual, olfactory and audible signals of bucks. Blood samples were obtained twice per week and serum progesterone concentrations were determined. All goats presented a clear pattern of seasonal ovulatory activity based on serum progesterone profiles. Length of the ovulatory activity period did not differ between genotypes (P >0.10), and had an average duration of 4.3 months. Nevertheless Criollo x Nubian goats presented greater individual variation in dates of onset and end as well as length of this period (P <0.05). Results indicate that female goats of genotypes which differ in latitude of origin, express a similar restricted pattern of seasonal ovulatory activity when subjected to small annual changes in phtoperiod, adequate nutrition and incomplete socio-sexual stimulus.

En el presente estudio se evaluó la variación de la actividad reproductiva estacional de cabras Nubia, Alpina y Nubia x Criolla en la región semiárida del norte centro de México (22° 14' N). El trabajo se realizó en condiciones de fotoperiodo y clima naturales, durante un año. Las cabras (n=8) de cada raza (Alpina, Nubia y Nubia x Criollo) se alojaron en corrales separados y estuvieron expuestas a las señales visuales, olfativas y auditivas de machos. Se tomaron muestras de sangre dos veces por semana y se determinó la concentración sérica de progesterona. De acuerdo con los perfiles de progesterona, todas las cabras mostraron un patrón estacional definido en su actividad ovulatoria. La amplitud del periodo de actividad ovulatoria no difirió entre razas (P>0.10), presentando una duración promedio de 4.3 meses. Sin embargo, las cabras Nubia x Criollo mostraron mayor variación individual en las fechas de inicio y finalización, así como en la amplitud de este periodo (PO.05). Se concluye que hembras caprinas de genotipos originados en diferentes latitudes expresan un patrón similar restringido de actividad ovulatoria estacional cuando son expuestas a cambios anuales reducidos en duración del fotoperiodo, nutrición adecuada y estimulación socio-sexual parcial.

The aim of this study was to determine if the mite Varroa destructor affects honey yields of honeybee (Apis mellifera) colonies in Mexico's semiarid high plateau. A total of 32 colonies with different degrees of mite infestation that had not been treated with miticides in the previous two years were used. Honey yields and mite infestation levels in adult bees were recorded and data were subjected to correlation analyses. A negative and significant correlation was found between V. destructor infestation level and honey yield (r= -0.44, P=0.01); and average infestation and honey yield values (±SD) were 15.21 ±8.44 % and 36.26±29.24 kg, respectively. Results indicate that when V. destructor infestation levels increase, honey yield drops significantly. Therefore it is recommended that colonies infested with V. destructor be subjected to control methods that reduce mite populations to favor an increase in honey yields.

El propósito del presente trabajo fue determinar sí el ácaro Varroa destructor afecta la producción de miel en colonias de abejas melíferas (Apis mellifera) del altiplano semiárido de México. Se utilizaron 32 colonias que variaban en sus niveles de infestación del ácaro y que no habían recibido ningún acaricida durante dos años. Se determinó la producción de miel y el nivel de parasitosis en abejas adultas de estas colonias y los datos se sometieron a un análisis de correlación. Se encontró una correlación negativa y significativa entre el nivel de infestación por Varroa y la producción de miel (r= -0.44, P=0.01). Los valores medios de infestación y producción de miel (±DE) fueron 15.21 ± 8.44 % y 36.26 ± 29.24 kg, respectivamente. Los resultados indican que al incrementarse el nivel de varroosis, la producción de miel se reduce de manera significativa. Se recomienda que las colonias de abejas infestadas por Varroa destructor sean sometidas a métodos de control que reduzcan la población del ácaro para contribuir a incrementar la producción de miel.

Objectives were determine the interaction effect of heat stress from embryo production season and embryo transfer season on pregnancy rates of recipient lactating cows, and evaluate effects of heat stress on embryo production and quality from superovulated cows. Lactating Holstein cows were superovulated during temperate (n=20) and warm (n=22) seasons. Embryos were collected, frozen and transferred into recipient lactating Holstein cows during temperate (n=54) and warm (n=53) seasons. Superovulatory response (85.1%) and fertilization rates were similar (76.2%) for both seasons (P>0.05). The number of oocytes and embryos (10.6), and transferable embryos (7.4) collected per cow during the temperate season were superior to the warm season (6.1 and 4.4 respectively, P<0.05). Pregnancy rates of recipient cows were higher during temperate season when they received an embryo produced during temperate season (45.0%), than when they received an embryo produced during warm season (21.5%, P<0.05). Regardless of embryo collection season, pregnancy rates of recipient cows during the warm season were lower (13.9%) than ones observed in recipient cows during the temperate season (33.2%, P<0.05). Heat stress compromised embryo yield and embryo competence for establishment of pregnancy, and reduced the ability of recipient cows to become pregnant after transfer.

Los objetivos fueron determinar el efecto de interacción del estrés calórico de la época de producción del embrión y la de transferencia sobre la tasa de gestación de vacas receptoras, y evaluar si existe efecto del estrés calórico sobre la producción y calidad embrionaria en vacas superovuladas. Vacas lactantes de la raza Holstein fueron superovuladas en la época templada (n=20) y cálida (n=22). Los embriones fueron colectados, congelados y transferidos a vacas Holstein lactantes durante la época templada (n=54) y cálida (n=53). La respuesta superovulatoria (85.1%) y la tasa de fertilización (76.2%) fueron similares en ambas épocas (P>0.05). En la época templada, el número de óvulos y embriones (10.6), y embriones transferibles (7.4) colectados por vaca fueron superiores a los observados en la época cálida (6.1 y 4.4, respectivamente) (P<0.05). La tasa de gestación de las vacas receptoras fue más alta durante la época templada cuando éstas recibieron un embrión producido en condiciones templadas (45.0%), que en aquéllas que recibieron un embrión de época cálida (21.5%, P<0.05). Independientemente de la época de producción del embrión, la tasa de gestación de las vacas receptoras fue menor durante la época cálida (13.9%) que en la templada (33.2%, P<0.05). El estrés calórico compromete la producción embrionaria y la competencia del embrión para el establecimiento de la gestación, y se mostró un efecto materno durante la época cálida, que impacta negativamente la sobrevivencia del embrión después de la transferencia.

El desarrollo folicular ovárico en los animales domésticos durante un ciclo estral sigue un patrón de dos o tres oleadas o grupos de folículos que crecen. En ese proceso están identificados tres eventos fisiológicos: el reclutamiento, la selección y la dominancia que ejerce el folículo de mayor tamaño sobre los subordinados. en cada oleada folicular es reclutado un grupo de folículos primordiales que posteriormente crecen. La selección del folículo dominante ocurre al final de la fase común de crecimiento. El folículo dominante continúa creciendo a una tasa constante y el resto de los folículos sufren atresia. La desviación folicular es un concepto relativamente nuevo y se refiere al inicio de una diferencia notoria en la tasa de crecimiento entre los dos folículos más grandes presentes en el ovario de hembras monotocas. Los mecanismos fisiológicos implicados en el proceso de desviación y selección no se han definido completamente, pero al parecer se relacionan con la adquisición de receptores para la hormona luteinizante en la granulosa del folículo dominante, un incremento en la producción de estradiol por este último y la disminución de las concentraciones de la hormona folículo-estimulante. Se encuentra implicado también el sistema a través de factores de crecimiento insulínicos (IGF-1 y -2), proteínas de unión (IGFBP-1, -2, -3, -4, -5 y -6) y proteasas específicas que degradan las IGFBPs. Se describen las relaciones endócrinas, parácrinas y autócrinas del crecimiento folicular, con énfasis en los factores fisiológicos señalados y que están envueltos en el proceso de desviación y selección.

Follicular development during a reproductive cycle in the ovaries of most domestic animals follows a pattern of two or three waves or groups. During that process, three different physiological events have been identified: recruitment, selection and dominance of the larger follicles over smaller ones. A group of primordial follicles is recruited in each wave, which then grow. Selection of a dominant follicle occurs at the end of the common growth phase. The dominant follicle grows at a constant rate, and weaker follicles undergo atresia, or they grow temporarily at a reduced rate and later succumb. Follicular deviation is a relatively new concept in understanding dominant follicle selection. Deviation refers to a well-known difference in the growth rate between the two largest follicles present in the ovary in a single pregnancy female. The physiological mechanisms implied in the processes of deviation and selection have not been defined completely, but apparently they are related to the acquisition of luteinizing hormone receptors in the granulose of the dominant follicle, an increase in its estradiol production, and to a reduction in circulating concentrations of the stimulating follicle hormone. The IGF system is also implied by its insulin growth factors (IGF-1 and -2), binding proteins (IGFBP-1, -2, -3, -4, -5 and -6), and specific proteases that degrade the IGFBPs. The endocrine, paracrine and autocrine relationships in follicular growth are described, with emphasis on the mentioned physiological factors involved in the processes of deviation and selection.
